Many times a customer asks me on the phone what it costs to remove a stump. The general criteria is the width of the tree stump or width of the desired stump grinding area and how many visible surface roots, if any, the customer would like to have removed. Also the type of tree can affect the pricing. In the Denver area, examples of more costly stumps would be a harder wood tree, such as a Honey Locust or Silver Maple.

You can get a good idea of determining the width of the grinding area by following the procedure below, and looking at the illustration.

Stump Diameter

1. Measure the diameter (width) of the stump at ground level. If there are visible surface roots, do not include the length of these roots in this measurement. See picture to right.
2. Roots - if there are visible surface roots (see picture to right, lower portion) there will be an additional charge to grind them depending on how many roots and how long they extend from the stump. Visible surface roots are most common with cottonwood and spruce trees.

3. If the stump has humped up the ground, extend the diameter to include grinding the hump to grade level.

4. Pricing estimates range from $4.00 to $7.00 per diameter inch for grinding only. Variances differ on type of tree, ease of accessibility, and volume of stumps to be removed.

5. Rocks or other landscaping materials around the stump may add to the cost of removal.

6. Any clean up is charged at an additional hourly rate.

7. If the vertical height of the tree stump, measured from ground level to the top of the stump is over 10 inches, this may add to the cost of the stump grinding.

In the video to the left is a demonstration on how to measure tree stump widths from a variety of different trees. Some of the trees have visible surface roots which is typical of Cottonwood trees. The stump width is measured at grade or ground level and this video explains how to determine an accurate stump grinding width.
